Designer denims are, of course, nothing new. Designer-and-denim-brand collaborations are also not terribly current. One of the earliest designers to work with jeans makers is Junya Watanabe. His teaming up with Levi’s has produced some very innovative treatments to the classic 501s. Last year, Jean Paul Gaultier also worked with Levi’s for some very un-laundered, decidedly tailored denim wear.
The latest designer to join the denim partnership is Vivienne Westwood. Her jeans are produced in collaboration with the Kansas-based Lee. I like this less obvious choice of a denim brand. Lee is not a label without history, having first made its name with overalls in the 1920s. Its jeans, while not terribly innovative on the design front, has tradition going for it. So it was good to know that Vivienne Westwood’s Anglomania line has chosen to work with such a heritage denim brand to come up with something decidedly Ms Westwood, all with swashbuckling swagger.
Especially fetching is this low-crotch jean (above right). Engineered in style and ample in volume, it’s the kind of jean you’d expect Vivienne Westwood to do, especially when she still dreams of her men as pirates!
Vivienne Westwood + Lee denim jeans are available at Luxe Men, level 4, Central Chidlom
