5cm Goes The Distance

Hong Kong label 5cm has always made wearable clothes cool and full of attitude. It’s A/W 2010 collection continues to blur the lines between work wear and street wear, sometimes unabashedly taking the cue from Junya Watanabe (the above quilted vest, for one!). What’s especially alluring is that, season after season, 5cm always tries to do something interesting. And that, in the post-fast fashion era, is very much welcomed by the discerning and budget-tight consumer.

Take the brand’s collaboration with American work wear brand Dickies. The result is a couple of pants done in typical Dickies style (heavy cotton twill), but given a fresh, somewhat Japanese take. I especially like the khaki (and black) chinos. It comes, predictably, with a turn-back cuff in tartan, but it’s the pocket treatment that deserves mention: slit pockets on which stitching was employed to mimic those similar to five-pocket jeans! The two-in-one that’s not quite.
