Hurts Is No Pain

While I am not a big fan of fashion’s return to the 80s, I totally dig bands that delve into the era of the New Romantics to come up with something that’s nostalgic, but just so. Hurts is one such band. With their debut single Wonderful Life (not Black’s 1985 single of the same title!), they’ve proved that looking back does not mean sounding backward: the result does not have to be unimaginatively retro. Their music, just as with those of compatriot¬† Everything Everything, augment Britain’s reputation for producing the most stylish bands.

The sound is vaguely familiar, or is it because they look familiar? In their black and white publicity stills, I see Tears for Fears, but they really sound like Furniture with bits of Binocular thrown in, and, perhaps, a pinch of Icicle Works too. Maybe it’s just me: the pleated pants in the Wonderful Life video give them extra points!
