The UN-initiated and WHO-endorsed Global Handwashing Day, first introduced last year, went without notice or observance throughout much of Bangkok today. Sad if you consider the many people who are still ignorant of personal and public hygiene despite the H1N1 scare.
Here’s the gist: Although we wash our hands with water, few of us wash with soap. There’s a belief that soap need only to follow toilet use. That mustn’t be so if you consider that virulent germs lurk outside latrines and in such unsuspecting places as the BTS, your iPhone, and the handles of your Birkin! Frequent handwashing with soap could mean lower rates of infectious disease. Think about it, and get sudsing. And, yes, that’s an exhortation!
